Mixed Results as Latest Scottish Employment Figures Published

According to official Government figures released last week, in the period March to May 2014, both employment and unemployment in Scotland have increased.

Employment in Scotland increased by 12,000 meaning the number of individuals in employment in Scotland now stands at 2,587,000.

Despite, UK unemployment falling to 2.12 million, the its lowest figure in six years, unemployment in Scotland also increased, rising by 13,000 during the last quarter, leaving the unemployment rate at 6.9 per cent

More encouragingly or Scotland, the employment rate remained just above the UK average, at 73.1 per cent. In addition, the country's economic activity for the quarter is also up to 78.8 per cent - 25,000 up on the previous quarter, and 63,000 up when compared with the same point in 2013.

Whilst unemployment in Scotland has increased, between March to May 2014, the number of people claiming Job Seeker's Allowance fell by 4,000 – a total of 35,000 lower than during the same period last year. Further, despite unemployment increasing during this quarter, it is still down over the whole year, when compared to last.

Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael said that the news "reminds us we need to continue creating the right conditions to get people into jobs".

He continued: "While it is disappointing to see unemployment rise at any time, the news comes against a backdrop of record overall employment, female employment and record private sector employment. The number of economically active people in Scotland is rising and the number of Scots claiming unemployment has now fallen for 16 consecutive months."

While female employment has reached a record high of 1,249,000 between the March and May period, Scottish Labour suggest that women account for 80 per cent of the overall rise in unemployment over the quarter. If the claims by the Labour party are true, it suggests that the choices currently being made by the Government are impacting on women disproportionately.

Scottish Chambers of Commerce Chief Executive Liz Cameron said, "It is clear that we must revisit the support environment to enable more females to enter and remain in the job market, together with an up-skilling and re-skilling plan, as a matter of real urgency."

The unemployment figures are a clear sign that our Scottish economy needs a stronger plan implemented to ensure that those without work can gain the skills and confidence they need to meet the demands of our businesses.
