A new early dispute resolution service, Early Conciliation, must now be used before a claim can be taken to an Employment Tribunal. The new service is provided by Acas and requires anyone thinking of making a claim to first notify the organisation in order to try and resolve the dispute before taking legal action.
Employment Relations Minister, Jenny Willott, said:
"Early Conciliation is good news for employees and employers. It will help them resolve their workplace disputes, avoiding the stress, time delays and excessive costs all too often associated with tribunals.
"Under our new free scheme anyone considering lodging a claim with an employment tribunal will now contact Acas before they submit their claim. If both parties agree, Acas will attempt to resolve the dispute for free to see if a tribunal can be avoided."
If an employee and employer cannot come to an agreement, the claimant will still be able to lodge a tribunal claim. However, after tomorrow (Tuesday 6th May 2014), anybody who wishes to lodge a claim with an Employment Tribunal will have to provide an Acas Early Conciliation Reference Number.
